Pokemon Legends Arceus: Which Starter Pokemon Should You Choose?

While the Pokemon franchise isn't exactly known for offering its players a lot of choice, there's a tough decision to make at the very beginning of most mainline Pokemon games. Before starting their adventure, players are asked to choose one of three potential starter Pokemon to accompany them on their journey, which is described in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

What sets Pokemon Legends: Arceus apart from most other Pokemon games is that it decided to get its starter Pokemon from three different regions and eras. Rowlet, Cyndaquil, and Oshawott represent the seventh, second, and fifth generations of Pokemon games, respectively, meaning there are some pretty big differences between the trio.

Why players should choose Rowlet as their starting Pokemon in Legendary: Arceus

Base Stat Total (First Form) 320

Base Stat Total (Final Form) 530

Type (First Form) Grass / Flying

Type (Final Form) Grass / Fighting

First Evolution Level 17

Second Evolution Level 34

Unlike Cyndaquil and Oshawott, Rowlet and its subsequent evolutionary forms each come in two distinct types. This, along with Rowlet's high base stats, is very useful in the early stages of the game, as it gives players additional type coverage as they gradually build up their teams. Rowlett also got the final stage of evolution at level 34, which is two levels faster than the other two potential starter Pokemon in Legends: Arceus.

Why players should choose Cyndaquil as their starter

Base Stat Total (First Form) 309

Base Stat Total (Final Form) 534

Type (First Form) Fire

Type (Final Form) Fire / Ghost

First Evolution Level 14

Second Evolution Level 36

Of the three potential starting Pokemon in Legends: Arceus, Sindaquier is the first to evolve. It does so at level 14, three full levels ahead of both Oshawott and Rowlet. Granted, Rowlet may reach its final form sooner, but Quilava should come in handy in the early stages of the game. Cyndaquil's final stage evolution, Hisuian Typhlosion, has higher base stats than any of its peers, although this does come at the cost of being slightly weaker in its earlier form.

Why players should choose Oshawott as their starter

Base Stat Total (First Form) 308

Base Stat Total (Final Form) 528

Type (First Form) Water

Type (Final Form) Water / Dark

First Evolution Level 17

Second Evolution Level 36

In previous Pokemon games, water starters have generally proven to be a safe bet, and this is no exception in Legends: Arceus. Oshawott is especially useful in the early stages of the game, as many of the Pokemon players will encounter early on can use rock-type moves. What's more, although its final stage evolution has a lower base stat total than either of its two counterparts, Samurot can be effective as a physical attacker or a special attacker as needed.

The Final Verdict

As is the case with Pokemon games, the selection of the best entry point in Pokemon Legends: Arceus will vary from player to player. That said, once nostalgia is excluded, Oshawott does appear to be the weakest of the trio due to its lower base stat total. Instead, Cyndaquil emerges as the fastest and most powerful overall, while Rowlet is able to offer more early game versatility than the other two options. However, players should also consider their team composition as a whole when choosing a starting Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. For example, if they plan to use Hisuian Arcanine or Infernape in their final team, then choosing Cyndaquil might not be the best idea. On the subject of Infernape, it's also worth noting that players will also have the chance to catch some other starter Pokemon in the wild.
