IconLegends: Arceus' Volo vs BDSP's Cynthia - which game is harder?

Pokémon Legends: Arceus features Volo, the Ginkgo guild trader, with frequent trainer battles as the player progresses throughout the game. However, the game ends with a fight against Volo and Giratina. Volo faces the player 3 times, using Togepi, then Togepi and Gible, and finally Togekiss, Spiritomb, Lucario, Roserade, Garchomp, and Hisuian Arcanine. Unlike Cynthia, players don't need to beat an elite foursome or trainer group before facing Pokémon Legends: Arceus' Volo for the third time. However, the difficulty with Volo comes when the player has to defeat the powerful trainer twice. After defeating his fully evolved (and powerful) team, Volo summons Giratina to his side. Players must defeat the legendary Pokémon in two different forms before finally defeating Volo. The length of this battle inevitably affects the players' party, forcing them to stock up on many healing items in advance. While Cynthia only needed one defeat, Volo needed several to back off.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus' Volo is an impressive trainer, but his strength is hidden until the end of the game. The most challenging part of his boss fight is the time it takes players to defeat him. His impressively diverse team forces players to adapt in combat and can hinder players from progressing quickly, but Giratina is the biggest obstacle. Defeating Legends: Arceus' Legendary Pokémon can be difficult, as many Pokémon have extremely powerful moves designed to hit the most powerful monsters in a player's team with a shot or two. Thankfully, players have a distinct advantage over Giratina from the first Pokémon they get: Legends: Arceus' Cyndaquil and Oshawott starters evolved into the Ghost-type and Dark-type, respectively. Since Giratina is weak against Ghost, Dark, Fairy, Ice, and Dragon-type Pokémon, this ensures that players who are ready can easily survive the second half of the battle.

Is Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Or BDSP’s Final Battle Harder?

Between Volo and Cynthia, the boss fights of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are more difficult. By leveraging proper competitive team-building and forcing players to develop effective strategies, Pokémon BDSP provides an enjoyable challenge for combat-oriented players. Meanwhile, Pokémon Legends: Arceus developed new game mechanics and its unique story. As such, seasoned fans are unlikely to be challenged by Volo's team and Giratina's battle. Pokémon Legends: Arceus also doesn't hold items or abilities, players can use Grit Dust and Pebbles to increase the team's EV. Volo's role as a boss might be a plot twist to some, but his resemblance to Cynthia is an interesting misdirection.

While Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Pokémon BDSP are very different games, the latter's emphasis on combat is much heavier. So, on a mechanical level, Cynthia's fight is much more difficult than Volo's. Combat is even rarer in Pokémon Legends: Arceus due to the reluctance of many characters to work with Pokémon. Thankfully, both games add entertainment to the franchise to entertain different Pokémon fans. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and Pokémon Legends: Arceus are now available for Nintendo Switch.
